Pakistan is finally heading swiftly towards achieving the milestones set for digital Pakistan by introducing the digital wallet. In a similar move, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), announced yesterday that the Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) of all the Pakistani Citizens will be converted into digital wallets. This is a remarkable stride toward the digital transformation for a country with low Information Technology (IT) infrastructure.
Already a mobile App named Pak Identity has been launched by the NADRA to facilitate citizens in getting various services, such as capturing the biometrics, photographs, face recognition, and documents through the cameras of smart phones. An update to the existing app is expected in the next few months.
According to Tariq Malik, Chairman NADRA, introducing the Digital Wallet will not help in public convenience but will also a step forward in getting rid of the conventional physical ID Card systems.

“The digital dividends of such technology innovation will yield positive results in contactless banking, financial inclusion, ease of doing business and e-governance initiatives by offering remote identification and e-KYC (electronic know your customer), said the Chairman. It is pertinent to mention that through e-KYC the identity and address of the customers can be verified digitally.
Moreover, Mr. Malik added that the Wallet concept will not only help in contactless banking but will also assist the institutions in financial inclusion, ease of doing banking and several other anticipated digital initiatives.
If successfully implemented, this will be another feather in the cap of NADRA who has already completed several national and international projects. Some of the local projects include National Identification System, Biometric Verification Services, Civil Registration Management System, Arms License, Pension and Zakat Disbursement System, Safe City, Kiosk and e-Sahulat, Integrated Border Management System, E-toll Collection System. Likewise, the authority has also been engaged in international projects.
